Completed entrance door after timber repairs and repainting

Stories From The Workshop

Door Renovation

Repairing the damaged timber while keeping the character of the original entrance.

The project

Repair what is damaged. Keep what is worth saving.

The lower part of the door frame uprights had deteriorated badly and needed more than filling or surface repair.

The rotten sections were removed back to sound timber and replaced with new wood. The two door drip weather boards were also replaced as part of the same repair.

Before painting, all of the new timber was treated with wood preservative to help protect the repaired areas from future deterioration.

The process

Repairing the damage while preserving the entrance

The aim was to deal properly with the rotten timber without unnecessarily removing the sound parts of the original structure.

1

Inspect

Identify the extent of the deterioration and establish which parts of the original timber remain sound.

2

Remove

Cut away the rotten sections until sound timber is reached.

3

Replace

Fit new timber sections to replace the parts of the frame that have failed.

4

Renew

Replace the deteriorated drip weather boards as part of the same repair.

5

Protect

Treat the new timber with preservative before applying the decorative finish.

6

Finish

Paint the repaired areas so that the new work blends back into the existing entrance.

Step by step

From rotten timber to a finished entrance

The photographs show the damaged frame being opened up, repaired with new timber and then protected and refinished.

The finished result

A substantial entrance preserved rather than replaced

The damaged sections were renewed while the sound parts of the original entrance were retained, preserving the appearance and character of the doorway.

The new timber and weather boards were protected before painting, helping to give the repaired areas a durable finish.

The completed work demonstrates how a localised timber repair can deal properly with deterioration without sacrificing an otherwise serviceable original feature.

Have a door or frame that needs attention?

Ask Dmytro whether the damaged timber can be repaired

A few close-up photographs of the affected areas, together with a picture of the complete door or frame, are usually enough to start discussing the options.
