Garden Furniture Restoration
Old garden furniture brought back to life rather than thrown away.
The project
Worth restoring
The original timber had deteriorated badly, but the cast-iron frames were still worth saving.
Rather than replacing the furniture, the pieces were dismantled so that the metalwork could be properly cleaned and treated before being refinished in its original green colour.
New timber was then prepared for the seating and the furniture was rebuilt to create a finished set that looked almost new again.
The process
Restoring rather than replacing
The project involved treating the surviving cast iron and replacing the parts that had reached the end of their useful life.
Dismantle
Take the furniture apart so the timber and metal components can be worked on separately.
Clean
Remove deterioration and old finishes from the cast-iron frames.
Protect
Apply a protective coating to help guard the prepared metalwork against rust.
Repaint
Restore the original green colour to the cast-iron structure.
Renew
Prepare new timber to replace the rotten seating components.
Rebuild
Reassemble the furniture using the restored frames and newly prepared timber.

The photographs show the furniture being dismantled, cleaned, protected, repainted and rebuilt with new timber.

The finished result
The original furniture retained, but given a completely new life
The sound cast-iron frames were preserved, protected and refinished, while the failed timber was replaced with new material.
The original green finish returned the metalwork to its familiar appearance, while the new timber made the furniture practical to use again.
The result was an attractive and usable garden furniture set without losing the character of the original pieces.
