Montage showing the replacement of failed double-glazed units in a timber window

Stories From The Workshop

Double Glazing Replacement

Replacing failed double-glazed units while retaining the existing timber window.

The project

New glazing without replacing the whole window

The existing timber window had deteriorated and several of the double-glazed panes had failed or ‘blown’, leaving them cloudy and no longer performing properly.

Rather than replacing the entire window, the failed glazing units were removed and replaced with new double-glazed units.

This allowed the original timber window to be retained and prepared for final decoration after the glazing work was completed.

The process

Replacing only what had failed

The work focused on renewing the defective glazing while retaining the existing timber structure.

1

Inspect

Assess the existing window and identify which glazing units have failed.

2

Remove

Carefully take out the failed double-glazed units from the timber frame.

3

Prepare

Prepare the existing openings so that the replacement units can be fitted properly.

4

Fit

Install the replacement double-glazed units into the retained window.

5

Secure

Complete the glazing work so that the new units sit correctly within the original frame.

6

Finish

Leave the repaired window ready for final decoration and finishing work.

Step by step

From failed glazing to new double-glazed units

The photographs show the existing failed glazing, the replacement units being fitted and the window ready for final decoration.

The finished result

New glazing without losing the original window

The failed glazing was replaced while the existing timber window itself was retained.

This avoided unnecessary replacement of the complete unit and allowed the original structure to remain part of the property.

With the new double-glazed units installed, the window could then be prepared for its final decorative finish.

Have cloudy or failed double glazing?

Ask Dmytro whether the glazing can be replaced without changing the whole window

A few photographs showing the complete window and the affected panes are usually enough to start discussing the job.
